HARSHMAN COVERED BRIDGE
Located on Concord-Fairhaven Road over Four Mile Creek
Built in 1894 by E. S. Sherman at a cost of $3,184 and with the masonry work
being done by J. M. Acton, this 109 foot Bridge crosses Four Mile Creek on
Concord-Fairhaven Road. The stone for the abutments was taken from the Stony
point quarry just a short distance south. There was a sawmill that once stood
along the creek near the bridge site.
The rehabilitation project for this bridge began in December of 2007 and was
completed in May of 2008 at a cost of approximately $340,000.00. As part of this
project new siding, flooring system, and standing seam metal roof were
installed.
Additionally, deficient members of the upper and lower chords were either replaced or added to raise the load limit of this bridge from 6 tons to 15 tons. This project was undertaken with 95% of the funding coming from the federal government so that future generations may be able to enjoy this local treasure as much as past generations.
